August’s Merchandising Plans & Treasury Tips

Happy ‘Autumn” Curation Nation teammies and faithful followers! Here are the targeted merchandising points for the month of August - they are straight from Etsy’s Merchandising Desk. These specifics are what Etsy will be looking to showcase on the front page. It’s a great guideline to use to create items for your shop or for the vintage shops to be on the hunt for. When you curate Treasuries using these merchandising tips, remember to tag them with these words and themes as well.

AUGUST’S BIRTHSTONE
: Peridot (pale green)

ASTROLOGICAL SIGNS: Leo is July 23 - August 23 and Virto (August 24 – September 23)

COLORS: On the rise: deep jewel tones, fluorescents, classic reds and kelly greens. Pantone’s color trend report for fall 2o11 includes quarry, cedar, and teal greens, nougat and coffee browns, orchid and phlox purples, bamboo mustard yellow, honeysuckle pink, and ember-glow coral.

BACK TO SCHOOL - Typical college go-ers move into the dorms/apartments mid to late August, while elementary through high schoolers are heading back during the first two weeks of September. Think college dorm room, organizational essentials, gadget and computer accessories, notebooks, writing utensils, cases, book bags, backpacks, satchels, lunch carriers, and fall fashion.

HALLOWEEN PREVIEW: It may seem early, but Halloween searches are on the rise. Particularly popular at this time is decor, party supplies, full costumes & accessories, pumpkin decorating ideas, and DIY kits. Get ahead of the game by listing your full Halloween line now.

PRESERVING THE SUMMER: Final summer vacations, outdoor activities, community events & fairs, open air soirees, summer fashion, and lighter, brighter colors. Emphasis on outdoor entertaining, hostess gifts, bath and beauty, outdoor lighting and savoring the last of summer nights.

HARVEST: Autumn decor, fall planting, preserving the summer garden’s bounty. Farm, rustic, and woodland motifs.

FASHION: Emphasis on intro to fall fashion. Think layers, outerwear accessories, boots, and autumn color palettes.

WEDDINGS: Autumn wedding options are in full swing. At the height of wedding season, think about how your line can offer or evoke both indoor/outdoor options for both the ceremony and after-party. Additional highlights on warm weather honeymooning.

OUTDOOR AND INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL: Think in terms of the beach, countryside, forest and mountains. Outdoor activities on the rise include music festivals, camping, biking, hiking, fun at the beach, fishing, and water sports.

COLLECTING: Summer months are an opportune time to take advantage of antiquing, collecting, flea markets, outdoor bazaars, and vintage renewal.

central merchandising will focus on Back to School, Intros to Autumn, Halloween!!! (those exclamation points are mine), Wedding Season, Preserving the Summer and Outddor Activities.

Saturday Theme Treasury Challenge - I Hear Jingle Bells!

You only have 5 months left to shop for the holidays!  Etsy is promoting their annual CIJ - Christmas in July - community event through July 24th.  All shops may participate and items on sale do not have to have a holiday theme.

To read the Etsy Finds 'That Time of Year' email, click here!

I realize last Wednesday's challenge was a focus on CIJ, but since the Etsy window of opportunity is a little one, only eleven days long, I thought we'd double the pleasure and kick it again for today's challenge.  Remember - your treasuries DO NOT have to have a holiday theme.  You only need to use some shops that are participating in the CIJ promotion. Don't forget about the vintage category!  I'd adore some vintage gifts for my presents this year!

There is always a photo used to express the theme but this item does not have to be included in your treasury.

Saturday Theme Treasury Challenge - The Millionaire & His Wife

Who is the millionaire and his wife you ask?  Why, none other than Thurston B. Howell the 3rd and Lovie.  Sing along with me!

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale.
A tale of a fateful trip.
That started from this tropic port.
Aboard this tiny ship.
Here on Gilligan's Isle!!

I opened the Etsy Finds 'Luxury Shopping Guide' email and I immediately thought of Thurston Howell the III and his wife, Lovie.  I always wondered why she packed so many clothes for a 3-hour tour.  A 3-hour tour!

This challenge is right up my alley as I have champagne taste on a beer budget!  To read the entire Finds email, click here!

For this week's challenge please curate as though you have NO budget limitations!  It's all about luxury! Think of categories such as spa & beauty, luxury travel, sport, and even specific color themes.  For instance, can you curate a treasury in one color where most items are on the high end?  Don't forget about the vintage category as there are AMAZING high end vintage items to be showcased.
